The MINATO MIRAI 21 area is located in the center of the international port city, Yokohama, on the waterfront and adjacent to the existing downtown area. A total of 186 hectares are being developed including 110 hectares of existing land and 76 hectares of reclaimed land, with the area where shipyards have moved to. As the name "Port of the Future 21st Century" implies, MINATO MIRAI 21 has been promoted jointly by the public sector, with the objective of developing a port city fit for the 21st century, since 1983, private sector and third sector, as a national project that is financed and fully supported by the central government. In 1988, the "Basic Agreement on Urban Redevelopment" was signed. This agreement stipulates the rules for independently promoting the MINATO MIRAT 21 project. In 1989 the" Yokohama Exposition (YES '89) was held to endorse the MINATO MIRAI 21 project.
3. Current status of project
Currently 90% of the land reclamation project has been completed for MINATO MIRAI 21 (as of 1996) , and infrastructure development including the construction of roads, a subway, underground sewage system, and joint waste processing facilities are underway, as well as the construction of office buildings. hotels , parks and other greenery spaces.
The Pacifico Yokohama is Japan's foremost multi-use, convention center, opened in 1991, and includes a conference center, exhibition hall, and hotel. In 1994, the National Yokohama International Conference Hall was opened, the largest of its kind in the world. (maximum seating 5006). Since its opening many international conventions and exhibitions have been held.
The Landmark Tower YOKOHAMA was opened in 1993 At 296 meters in height. it is Japan's highest skyscraper, and is the first large private sector structure to be build within the MINATO MIRAI 21 area. In addition to large office space, a hotel and shopping mall, it also has an observatory on the top floor and other cultural facilities. Being Japan's largest complex development, Landmark Tower Yokohama draws large crowds due to the diverse attractions it has to offer.(During the year following its opening a total of 35 million visitors were recorded).
The Queen's Square Yokohama is slated for opening in the summer of 1997. As a leading model area where advanced urban activities will be concentrated, this huge development with a total floor space of 500,000 square meters will be used for offices, commercial businesses, hotels and a world class concert hall.
